CLASSIFIED POSITION OPENINGS  - Non-Teacher Position Openings

Tacoma Public Schools employs approximately 1,600 regular and 1,000 non-regular classified staff which serve a diverse population of over 32,000 students.

To be considered for any of the positions listed below, all candidates must either be a current employee of Tacoma Public Schools or have a current complete CLASSIFIED EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION on file with the Human Resources department.

Any additional application requirements are as specified below.  Bargaining unit employees receive first consideration for bargaining unit vacancies in accordance with their respective agreements.  All candidates are subject to further skills testing.  Only candidates selected for interview will be notified; all others may assume they were not chosen.

Classified Hourly Employees

Tacoma School District employs over 100 classified (non-certificated) staff as hourly employees--crossing guards, health room assistants, extra office help when needed, etc.  These employees serve critical roles in providing needed service to our schools, particularly our elementary schools.  Hourly work tends to be fairly regular, and it does not exceed 540 hours a year for any one individual (this is an average of fifteen hours a week from September through June). While there is no guarantee of continued or permanent employment, the District has typically hired a number of hourly employees for regular position openings.

These positions are ideal for folks who love to work with children and who do not want to work fulltime.  Retirees, college students, and stay-at-home parents of school-aged children are also ideal candidates for these positions.  We have several elementary schools who would love to have you join their teams. Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

Tacoma School District is seeking candidates for the position of substitute speech language pathology assistant (SLPA). SLPAs work under the supervision of speech language pathologists (SLPs). SLPA work responsibilities include: working directly with students (individual, group, and classroom work) to help increase students' speech and language skills; communicating with SLP and other school staff; organizing and producing materials; paperwork (medicaid forms, data and notes on log sheets, filing, etc.). Applicants need to feel comfortable working with students from preschool through age 21 with various disabilities. The ability to walk, carry light weight materials and to work in a preschool setting with small sized furniture is necessary. Substitutes will provide coverage for a long term absence or vacancy. Candidates are required to have 90 college credits or a two year degree. A one day training will be planned for this summer. Tacoma School District employs over 200 classified (non-certificated) staff as clerical/secretarial (office professional), para-educator and security substitutes.  These employees serve critical roles in providing coverage for position openings due to staff absences or unfilled vacancies.  Substitute work is considered temporary, on-call employment.  While there is no guarantee of continued or permanent employment, the District has typically hired a number of former substitutes for regular position openings. 

To be considered for a para-educator substitute position,  applicants must meet minimum requirements as listed by clicking here.  In addition, all clerical/secretarial (office professional), para-educator and security substitute candidates must complete the following:

Substitute Custodian

Tacoma School District is currently seeking candidates for the position of substitute custodian.  Substitutes perform general custodial duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Custodians.  Some of the duties may include cleaning of bleachers and stands after outdoor athletic events or general custodial housekeeping work. Substitutes provide coverage for position openings due to staff absences or unfilled vacancies.  Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs.  Previous custodial experience preferred.  Current substitute rate is $9.64 per hour.  To apply, submit a Classified Employment Application.

FOOD SERVICES

Tacoma Public Schools is recruiting for food service substitutes and permanent part-time staff to help in the preparation and serving of food in school cafeterias.  Substitutes are on-call at $7.58 per hour.  Permanent part-time staff start at $8.76 per hour and receive paid leave and holiday benefits, vacation pay and a uniform allowance.  Assignments average 2-3.75 hours per day.  (Longer assignments are available with longevity.)  Lunch is provided.  Minimum qualifications:  Successful background check, ability to learn procedures and follow instructions, maintain good personal hygiene and demonstrate good public relations.  A current Food & Beverage Service Worker permit is required within 14 days of employment.  Social Security card, picture ID required.  For permanent employment, a high school diploma, GED, or successful completion of a practical assessment performed by the Food Services Department is required.  Contact Denise Casseday, Food Services Office at (253) 571-3374 for further information.  Pick up application at Food Services Office, 3321 South Union Avenue or:
